That’s How We Start to Change This World: an article about reSTORation: Storytelling Erasmus+ Exchange
In March, just before the world as we knew ended, a bunch of dreamers and storytellers met in the middle of the Netherlands’ countryside. And I was one of them. With our souls ready for a new life changing experience we were smoking our cigarettes in front of our new temporary home. There was this feeling of acceptance even on this first night. My laughter quickly became sincere as we were making jokes in the dark, still tired from our travelling.
What did we do for the next week and a half? Well, first of all, we danced. A lot. I swear, I have never danced that much in my life as I did for those 10 days. And since the exchange you can see me dancing my heart out every morning in my kitchen in my small apartment in Ljubljana. But more importantly, we had a space to share our stories. As a kid who didn’t feel safe enough to use his voice in his childhood this meant a lot. This was the beauty of this Erasmus+ exchange. We felt safe, we felt heard, we felt like we belong.
Even if we were spending all of our time together during the day, somehow after the activities for the day were over, we still couldn’t get enough of each other. More or less every evening we would sing Bohemian Rhapsody using every feeling in our body. It was, what I can best describe as, healing. We are the youth addicted to working on ourselves, on becoming more compassionate, understanding and happy. And there was one sentence that was in my mind for every moment we were there: When dreamers unite, well that’s how we start to change the world.
And I don’t doubt that we will.
